| 17 | Grandaddy (Robert Hanes Gray, Sr.) Taken at Locust Hill farm "guest house", midway between LH entrance on Rt. 601, and his residence at the bottom of the hill: 1+ miles. Many nights as a small child were spent eating fried chicken, okra, apple pie, ice cream and Archway cookies made by his cooks while paging through New Yorker magazine cartoons as the parents/GPs watched McNeil-Lehrer news hour on PBS. "The Best Is the Enemy of the Good". A telling riddle whose complexities and mysterious meanings have been woven throughout my own personal life. Grandaddy taught it regularly, and its potential as a snare. | ||

Also included are National Archive Confederate States Army documents that detail several Coleman's Civil War date of enlistments, injuries, deaths, and so forth. There is an oral transfer described by James C. Coleman and his grandmother about her run in with the marauding Yanks as a 6 year old girl. |

| 29 | Robert Hanes Gray Jr (left) and III Christmas at Rosedale, Rt. 633 Pamplin Virginia, old "Sears" Farmhouse. Before that it was "Colonel Gilliam's" place. The painting above the fireplace was a rendering from a post-civil war photograph that included slaves and the Gilliam family. The story goes that during Union occupation Col. Gilliam shot a negro slave stealing from the meat house in back, killing him, and was incarcerated by the Union for 7 years. LongJohns served well at Rosedale; sub-zero temps with no central air and 12 foot ceilings...awesome! Rosedale was 1 of 3 parcels of Robert Hanes Gray, Sr.'s farm. Rosedale: 200 acres. Van Dale (6 miles away), 2200 acres and Locust Hill (800 acres). | ||
